What is DLP?
Data loss prevention is software that spots sensitive information and controls where it can go. NIST’s glossary (from CNSSI 4009-2022) defines it as a system’s ability to identify, monitor and protect data in use, data in motion and data at rest, using content inspection and the context of each transfer.
DLP software recognizes sensitive data in a few ways:
- Patterns: card numbers, Social Security numbers and similar formats.
- Exact data matching: comparing files against a copy of your real customer list or database.
- Fingerprints: recognizing a known document, or part of it, after it’s been edited.
- Labels: acting on sensitivity tags people or tools add, such as “Confidential.”
- Image text (OCR): reading text inside screenshots and scans.
When a rule matches, the tool logs it, warns the user, encrypts the file or blocks the transfer.
Types of DLP: endpoint, network, cloud and email
The four types of DLP are named for where the software watches data: on the device, on the network, inside cloud apps and in email. Most tools on this page cover two or more.
| Type | Watches | Typical controls | Examples here |
|---|---|---|---|
| Endpoint DLP | Laptops and desktops (data in use) | USB blocking, print, copy-paste, uploads | ManageEngine, CurrentWare, Netwrix Endpoint Protector |
| Network DLP | Traffic leaving your network (data in motion) | Inspecting web and file transfers | Forcepoint, Symantec |
| Cloud DLP | SaaS apps and storage (data at rest) | Scanning Drive, OneDrive, Slack; revoking shares | Nightfall, Google Workspace, Microsoft Purview |
| Email DLP | Outbound mail and attachments | Block, encrypt or quarantine | Proofpoint, Microsoft Purview |
DLP you may already have: Microsoft Purview and Google Workspace
Microsoft 365 Business Premium, at $22 per user a month paid yearly, includes Microsoft Purview data loss prevention and sensitivity labeling, according to Microsoft’s pricing page (checked October 24, 2026). Business Standard ($14) doesn’t list DLP. For small businesses that want more, Microsoft sells two add-ons for Business Premium, each limited to 300 users:
| Microsoft option | Price (per user a month, paid yearly) | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Business Premium | $22 | Basic Purview DLP and labels |
| Purview Suite for Business Premium | $10 add-on | DLP across apps, devices and cloud; insider risk; AI and Copilot controls |
| Defender and Purview Suites for Business Premium | $15 add-on | The above plus E5-level threat protection |
| Microsoft Purview Suite (enterprise) | $12 add-on | Requires Microsoft 365 E3 ($39) |
| Microsoft 365 E5 | $60 | Purview data security built in |
Google Workspace includes DLP for Drive only on Enterprise Standard and Plus, Frontline Standard and Plus, the Education editions and Enterprise Essentials Plus, per Google’s admin help. Business Starter, Standard and Plus are not on that list.
The tools
Tools follow the ranking: published prices first, then quote-only tools A–Z.
ManageEngine Endpoint DLP Plus
ManageEngine Endpoint DLP Plus costs $795 a year for 100 computers and one technician on the Professional edition, about $0.66 per computer per month by our arithmetic. A free edition covers up to 25 devices. Skip it if you have 30 computers: you still pay for the 100-computer pack.
Safetica
Safetica’s cloud plans start at $72 per user a year (Standard), $96 (Premium) and $144 (Enterprise), priced annually. An on-premises version is quote only. Best for small and mid-size teams that want endpoint and cloud DLP without an enterprise contract.
CurrentWare AccessPatrol
CurrentWare lists AccessPatrol, its device control and DLP product, at $12 per user a month, billed yearly; the four-product CurrentWare Suite is $20. Contracts start at $1,440 a year. Best for blocking USB drives and other peripherals. Skip it if you need content inspection in cloud apps.
Cyberhaven
Cyberhaven traces where data came from (data lineage) and blocks it from leaving by email, web, USB, personal cloud and AI tools. Cyberhaven’s page gives an example policy that stops source code and customer data being pasted into personal AI accounts. Quote only.
Forcepoint DLP
Forcepoint DLP covers endpoints, network, cloud and email in one policy set, deployed on-premises, in the cloud or hybrid. Forcepoint says it inspects prompts and responses for generative AI tools. Quote only (“Request Pricing”).
Netwrix Endpoint Protector
Netwrix Endpoint Protector (formerly CoSoSys) is endpoint DLP and device control for Windows, macOS and Linux, covering USB drives and “45+ peripheral devices” even offline. Netwrix mentions self-service checkout for organizations up to 150 employees but publishes no figure.
Nightfall AI
Nightfall sells cloud-first DLP across SaaS apps, email, AI apps and endpoints, priced per user per year by quote. Nightfall offers a free 7-day proof of value rather than a self-serve trial.
Proofpoint Enterprise DLP
Proofpoint Enterprise DLP covers email, cloud apps and endpoints, including USB transfers and web uploads. Best for companies already using Proofpoint for email security. Quote only.
Symantec DLP
Symantec DLP, now part of Broadcom, monitors data at the endpoint, in storage, over web and email and in the cloud under one policy framework. Broadcom sells it through partners. Quote only.
Teramind DLP
Teramind pairs DLP with employee activity monitoring, including full-screen recordings and email scanning. Teramind’s own blog posts quote per-seat prices, but we couldn’t find a live pricing page, so we list it as quote only. Skip it if screen recording of staff is a problem for your culture or your jurisdiction.
How much does DLP software cost?
Published DLP prices run from about $0.66 per computer per month (ManageEngine, 100-computer pack) to $12 per user per month (CurrentWare AccessPatrol, the highest of the three entry prices), checked October 24, 2026. Enterprise tools such as Forcepoint, Proofpoint and Symantec quote only.
The license is the smaller cost. Plan for:
- Policy tuning. New rules flag too much at first; someone has to review and adjust them.
- False-positive triage. Every blocked transfer that turns out to be legitimate costs staff time.
DLP vs DSPM vs CASB vs insider risk management
DLP controls data as it moves; the other three tools find, govern or watch data and people in different ways. Ask which of them a quote includes.
| Tool | Main job |
|---|---|
| DLP | Detect and block sensitive data leaving by email, USB, upload or AI tools |
| DSPM (data security posture management) | Find where sensitive data sits in cloud storage and who can reach it |
| CASB (cloud access security broker) | Control which cloud apps people use and what they do in them |
| Insider risk management | Score risky behavior, such as a departing employee downloading files |
DLP and SIEM are different too: a SIEM collects security logs from many systems for investigation, and DLP alerts are one of the feeds it collects. If you want someone to watch those alerts around the clock, compare managed security service providers.
DLP for generative AI
Several DLP vendors now control what staff paste or upload into AI chatbots, according to their own product pages:
- Proofpoint: detects and controls sensitive data in GenAI prompts and uploads, “including unsanctioned tools.”
- Forcepoint: inspects prompts and responses for generative AI tools.
- Cyberhaven: discovers shadow AI use and blocks sensitive data from prompts, uploads and agents.
- Nightfall: lists AI apps among its integrations and markets shadow AI leak prevention.
- Microsoft Purview Suite for Business Premium: policy controls for AI experiences and Copilot interactions.
How to choose DLP software (and roll it out without breaking work)
Start with the data you most need to protect and the exits it actually uses, then pick the cheapest tool that covers both.
- Check your existing licenses for Microsoft Purview or Google Workspace DLP first.
- Name two or three data types (card numbers, patient records, source code) instead of “everything.” If patient records are on the list, see our HIPAA compliance software guide too.
- Run in monitor mode for a few weeks before you block anything, and tune the rules.
- Tell employees what is monitored. Tools such as Teramind record screens; get advice from counsel on notice and consent where you operate.
- Match the tool to the exits: USB-heavy offices need endpoint DLP; cloud-first teams need SaaS coverage.
For the wider set of tools that protect company laptops, including mobile device management (MDM) software, see our endpoint security section.
