HIPAA Compliance Software: 9 Tools Compared by Price

HIPAA compliance software helps healthcare providers and their vendors run the program HIPAA requires: a security risk analysis, policies, staff training, business associate agreements (BAAs) and incident tracking. Of the 9 tools we compared on October 24, 2026, Abyde has the lowest published price, $1,738.80 a year for one location with up to 10 employees, and no tool can make you "HIPAA certified" because HHS doesn't recognize such certifications.

  • Lowest published price: Abyde, $1,738.80 a year billed annually (1 location, 1–10 employees)
  • Practices that need more seats: Accountable Basic, $2,028 a year with 15 employees included

How we ranked the HIPAA tools

We ranked each tool by the lowest annual price it publishes for an entry plan that covers HIPAA, from its own pricing page or its public AWS Marketplace listing, checked October 24, 2026. AWS figures are list prices for a 12-month contract, not negotiated prices. Where a listing prices the platform and the framework separately, the total is our sum of those published prices. Headcount limits differ, so read the “main limit” column before comparing. We included software whose main job is running a HIPAA program; secure email and file-transfer tools that store patient data are a different category and are left out.

What HIPAA compliance software does

HIPAA compliance software turns the Security Rule’s paperwork into tasks you can track: risk analysis, policies, training, vendor agreements and incident records.

HIPAA requirement (45 CFR)What the software does
Risk analysis, §164.308(a)(1)(ii)(A)Guided security risk assessment and a risk register
Security awareness and training, §164.308(a)(5)Assigns and records staff training
Business associate contracts, §164.308(b)Stores and tracks BAAs with each vendor
Periodic evaluation, §164.308(a)(8)Re-runs the assessment and keeps the history
Policies and procedures, §164.316Policy templates and staff sign-off

The tools

Abyde and Accountable are built for medical and dental practices; Sprinto, Vanta, Drata and Secureframe are compliance platforms aimed at software vendors that handle health data for their customers.

1. Abyde

Abyde costs $1,738.80 a year billed annually, or $161 a month on a 12-month term, for one location with up to 10 employees (Abyde’s pricing calculator). Abyde’s plan comparison says the covered-entity plan includes the security risk analysis, training, business associate tracking and generated policies. Skip it if you are a software vendor; Abyde sells a separate business-associate plan.

2. Accountable

Accountable Basic HIPAA costs $2,028 a year with 15 employees included and extra seats at $9 a month each. Plus costs $3,048 a year and Pro $8,148; Accountable says Pro adds dedicated support, vulnerability scans twice a year and one penetration test a year. The 7-day trial auto-bills when it ends.

3. Sprinto

Sprinto lists $7,500 a year for its Starter platform (up to 100 employees) plus $2,000 for a first framework, which can be HIPAA, on AWS Marketplace. Sprinto fits a SaaS company that will add SOC 2 or ISO 27001 later. Skip it if you run a clinic.

4. Vanta

Vanta’s AWS Marketplace listing starts at $14,000 a year for its Essentials package for 1–20 employees. The listing doesn’t say which frameworks the package includes, so confirm HIPAA coverage in writing before you buy.

5 (tie). Drata and Secureframe

Drata lists its Foundation package for companies with 1–50 employees at $15,000 a year, without itemizing frameworks. Secureframe lists $7,500 for its platform (up to 100 employees) plus $7,500 for the first framework of your choice, and its listing says fees are non-refundable.

Quote-only: Compliancy Group, HIPAA One, Scytale

Compliancy Group, HIPAA One and Scytale publish no prices. Compliancy Group’s pricing page is a request form, so they sit below the ranked table rather than in it.

How much HIPAA compliance software costs

HIPAA compliance software costs $1,738.80–$8,148 a year for practice-focused tools and $9,500–$15,000 a year in AWS list prices for SaaS compliance platforms, based on the published prices above. Larger health systems usually buy enterprise risk software sold by quote. Budget separately for anything the plan excludes, such as penetration tests or extra locations.

Is there a HIPAA certification?

No: HHS says no standard requires you to “certify” HIPAA compliance, and it “does not endorse or otherwise recognize private organizations’ ‘certifications’”. Microsoft makes the same point on its own HIPAA page. A badge from a vendor or consultant doesn’t stop HHS from finding a violation later. Ask a vendor for these instead:

  • A signed business associate agreement before it touches patient data.
  • Its own risk analysis and security policies.
  • Independent reports, such as a SOC 2 Type 2 report, as evidence of how it runs its controls.

How to make your software HIPAA compliant

Software becomes usable for HIPAA work when every vendor that touches protected health information signs a BAA and your system meets the Security Rule’s safeguards; there is no product certification to buy.

  1. Sign a BAA with every vendor that handles PHI, including cloud hosting, email and AI APIs. HHS says a cloud provider storing PHI is a business associate even if it only holds encrypted data and has no key.
  2. Run a risk analysis of how your product stores and moves PHI.
  3. Build the technical safeguards: unique user IDs, access controls, audit logs and encryption. Encryption is “addressable” under today’s rule, meaning you must use it or document why an alternative is reasonable.
  4. Train your team and write the policies the rule requires.

Is Microsoft HIPAA compliant? Microsoft signs BAAs with customers for its enterprise products and says HHS approves no certification standard. Is there a HIPAA-compliant ChatGPT? OpenAI offers a BAA for its API and for sales-managed ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu accounts, and says it does not offer one for ChatGPT Business.

HIPAA penalties in 2026

HIPAA civil penalties run from $145 to $73,011 per violation for the lower tiers, with a calendar-year cap of $2,190,294, and these 2025 amounts still apply in 2026. HHS announced on October 21, 2026 that it would make no 2026 inflation adjustment (91 FR 66566).

Tier (45 CFR 160.404)Minimum per violationMaximum per violation
Did not know$145$73,011
Reasonable cause$1,461$73,011
Willful neglect, corrected within 30 days$14,602$73,011
Willful neglect, not corrected$73,011$2,190,294

The proposed 2025 HIPAA Security Rule update

HHS proposed a stricter Security Rule on January 6, 2025 (90 FR 898), and as of October 24, 2026 the Federal Register showed no final rule, so the proposal is not law. Per the proposal, the rule would:

  • Require encryption of patient data at rest and in transit, with limited exceptions.
  • Require multifactor authentication.
  • Require vulnerability scans at least every six months and periodic penetration testing.
  • Require a written technology asset inventory and network map, reviewed at least every 12 months.

A vendor that calls these “required by HIPAA” today is describing the proposal.

How to choose HIPAA compliance software

Pick by who you are first, then by price.

  • A practice or clinic: start with Abyde or Accountable and compare the headcount each price covers.
  • A software vendor (business associate): a compliance platform such as Sprinto, Vanta, Drata or Secureframe, especially if customers will also ask for SOC 2.
  • Any buyer: get HIPAA coverage and the BAA terms in writing, and check the renewal price before you sign a 12-month contract.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if software is HIPAA compliant?

No software is HIPAA compliant on its own, and HHS approves no certification for it. Ask whether the vendor will sign a business associate agreement for the service you'll use, and how it supports the Security Rule's safeguards in your configuration.

Do small practices need HIPAA compliance software?

No law requires software. HIPAA requires the work: a risk analysis, policies, workforce training and BAAs. Small practices buy software because it bundles those tasks; at $1,738.80 a year, Abyde was the lowest published price we found.

Is a BAA enough for HIPAA compliance?

No. A BAA is required before a vendor handles your protected health information, but you still need your own risk analysis, safeguards, policies and training under the Security Rule.

Does HIPAA require an annual risk assessment?

The current Security Rule requires an accurate and thorough risk analysis and a periodic evaluation, without a fixed yearly schedule. The January 2025 proposal would require reviewing it at least every 12 months, but as of October 24, 2026 that rule is not final.

What's the cheapest HIPAA compliance software?

Of the 9 tools we compared on October 24, 2026, Abyde had the lowest published price: $1,738.80 a year billed annually for one location with up to 10 employees. Accountable Basic was next at $2,028 a year.
