EDR vs MDR: What Each Is, What Each Costs, Which You Need
EDR (endpoint detection and response) is software that detects and responds to attacks on your devices, while MDR (managed detection and response) is a 24/7 service in which an outside team watches that software and responds for you. In ThreatDown's published price list, adding MDR moves the price from $79 per device per year (Advanced EDR) to $99 (Elite MDR, 5-device bundle), about 1.25 times as much (checked October 24, 2026).
| EDR | MDR | |
|---|---|---|
| What you buy | Software on each device | A service: people plus software |
| Who responds | Your IT staff or MSP | The provider’s analysts, 24/7 |
| Hours covered | Whenever someone is watching | Around the clock |
| Published price | From $79 per device a year (ThreatDown Advanced EDR) | From $99 per device a year (ThreatDown Elite MDR) |
| Contract minimums | Few; CrowdStrike Falcon Go online is capped at 100 devices | Huntress direct: 50 seats, 12 months |
| What you still own | Tuning, triage, response, reporting | Approving actions, fixing root causes |
What is EDR?
EDR (endpoint detection and response) is software that records what happens on each laptop, desktop and server and responds when something looks like an attack, for example by isolating the device. The White House budget office’s memo M-22-01 describes EDR as real-time continuous monitoring of endpoint data combined with rules-based automated response and analysis. Examples include Microsoft Defender for Business, CrowdStrike Falcon Enterprise, ThreatDown Advanced EDR and SentinelOne Singularity.
What is MDR?
MDR (managed detection and response) is a 24/7 service in which an outside security team watches your EDR alerts, investigates them and contains real threats for you. Gartner defines MDR services as providing “remotely delivered security operations center (SOC) functions” for detection, investigation and response, usually on a predefined technology stack. Most MDR services run on EDR, either the provider’s own agent or one you already own.
How much do EDR and MDR cost?
MDR costs more than EDR per device: ThreatDown’s Elite MDR bundle costs $20 more per device per year than its Advanced EDR. The table converts each published price to a year per device (our arithmetic), sorted low to high; quote-only services come last.
| Product | Type | Published price, per year | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Defender for Business | EDR | $36 per user (up to 5 devices each) | Microsoft list price |
| ThreatDown Advanced EDR | EDR | $79 per device | List price, 5-device bundle |
| ThreatDown Elite MDR | MDR | $99 per device | $495 for 5 devices |
| Huntress Managed EDR | MDR | $107.88 per endpoint | $8.99 a month MSRP |
| SentinelOne Singularity Complete | EDR and XDR | $179.99 per endpoint | List price, sold via partners |
| CrowdStrike Falcon Enterprise | EDR | $184.99 per device | List price |
| Arctic Wolf MDR Basic | MDR | $44,000 for up to 100 users | List price on AWS Marketplace; private offers vary |
| CrowdStrike Falcon Complete | MDR | Contact sales | Not published |
| SentinelOne MDR | MDR add-on | Contact sales | Not published |
Huntress calls its product Managed EDR, but Huntress says it pairs its agent with a “24/7 AI-centric, human-led SOC” that investigates and contains threats, so it works as an MDR service. ThreatDown’s Elite MDR price includes its EDR agent.
Monthly cost for 25 and 100 endpoints
Monthly bills at list price, our arithmetic before tax:
| 25 endpoints | 100 endpoints | |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Defender for Business (EDR, per user) | $75 | $300 |
| CrowdStrike Falcon Enterprise, monthly billing (EDR) | $499.75 | $1,999 |
| Huntress Managed EDR via an MSP (MDR, MSRP) | $224.75 | $899 |
| Huntress Managed EDR bought direct (50-seat minimum) | $449.50 | $899 |
Huntress is channel-first: MSPs buy with no Huntress minimum, while resellers and direct buyers commit to 50 seats per product for 12 months. An MSP adds its own fee on top of MSRP. Full price lists: CrowdStrike Falcon bundles, SentinelOne Singularity packages and Huntress’s five managed products.
Which do you need: EDR or MDR?
Pick MDR if nobody on your team can act on an alert at 2 a.m.; pick EDR alone if someone can, every day. Three questions decide it:
- Who answers a night or weekend alert? If the honest answer is “nobody”, buy MDR.
- Does anyone triage alerts daily? EDR only helps when someone reads and acts on its alerts. If IT is one generalist, MDR or an MSP that runs EDR for you fills that gap.
- What does your insurer ask? Coalition, a cyber insurer, tells brokers that clients should install “antivirus or EDR software on all user devices”; see what insurers check before they cover a small business.
For a handful of PCs with no sensitive data, small-business antivirus may be enough to start.
Can you use your own EDR with an MDR service?
Yes, many MDR services run on EDR you already own. Sophos says its MDR is “vendor-agnostic by design” and works with customers running Microsoft, CrowdStrike and SentinelOne, including Microsoft Defender for Endpoint and Defender for Business. ThreatDown runs its MDR on its own agent, and Huntress uses its own agent while running alongside Microsoft Defender Antivirus, which it says it manages at no extra cost.
Where XDR fits (EDR vs MDR vs XDR)
XDR (extended detection and response) is software, like EDR, that adds email, identity and cloud data to endpoint detections; MDR is still the service layer on top. SentinelOne’s cheapest package with XDR lists at $179.99 per endpoint per year, and its MDR is an add-on to the Commercial and Enterprise packages. You can buy EDR plus MDR, or XDR plus MDR; EDR vs XDR covers the software side.
MDR vs MSSP
An MSSP (managed security service provider) can run a wider set of security services than MDR, such as managed firewalls, SIEM log monitoring and vulnerability scanning, while MDR focuses on detecting and containing attacks. Many MSSPs sell MDR as one of those services; our comparison of 15 managed security providers lists which ones publish prices.
Frequently asked questions
Do small businesses need MDR or EDR?
A small business needs EDR on every device and, unless someone on staff can respond to alerts around the clock, an MDR service watching it. Published MDR prices start at $99 per device per year (ThreatDown Elite MDR) and $8.99 per endpoint per month (Huntress MSRP).
Is SentinelOne an EDR, MDR or XDR?
All three, sold separately. SentinelOne's Singularity Complete package covers real-time threat detection and response on endpoints and adds XDR, at $179.99 per endpoint per year, while SentinelOne's MDR is an add-on to the Commercial and Enterprise packages, priced by quote.
Is CrowdStrike EDR or MDR?
Both, as separate products. Falcon Enterprise is CrowdStrike's EDR bundle at $184.99 per device per year; Falcon Complete is its 24/7 MDR service, with no published price.
What is the difference between EDR and antivirus?
Antivirus blocks known malicious files; EDR records activity on each device and responds to suspicious behavior, such as isolating a laptop. The White House budget office (OMB memo M-22-01) describes EDR as continuous endpoint monitoring with automated response and analysis.
Is EDR enough for cyber insurance?
EDR is usually what insurers ask about; MDR is rarely a stated requirement. Coalition tells brokers that clients should install antivirus or EDR on all user devices, so check your own carrier's application.
How much does MDR cost per endpoint?
Published MDR prices run from $99 per device per year (ThreatDown Elite MDR) to $107.88 per endpoint per year (Huntress MSRP), while Arctic Wolf lists $44,000 a year for up to 100 users on AWS Marketplace. Most MDR providers quote instead.
