Bitwarden vs 1Password price (2026)
Bitwarden is the cheaper password manager at every size: a single person pays nothing or $19.80 a year, against $47.88 a year for 1Password Individual at its regular price.
| Plan | Bitwarden | 1Password |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Free plan | None |
| One person, first year | $19.80 | $35.88 (new-customer promo) |
| One person, renewal | $19.80 | $47.88 |

| Family, first year | $47.88 (6 users) | $53.88 (5 users) |
| Family, renewal | $47.88 | $71.88 |
Yearly and 2-year figures are our sums of the published prices. 1Password quotes per-month prices billed yearly; its first-year promo is for new customers buying on 1Password.com, then the plan renews at the regular price.
1Password raised its yearly prices at renewals on or after March 27, 2026, according to 9to5Mac’s report of 1Password’s email to customers: Individual went from $35.88 to $47.88 a year, and Families from $59.88 to $71.88. Comparison pages written before that date show the old prices.
Is Bitwarden as secure as 1Password?
Bitwarden has the longer public audit record of the two: its help center lists 25 third-party audits and assessments from 2018 to 2025, while 1Password’s security page names two assessments (one dated 2020, one undated) and now shares its yearly pentest reports through its Trust Center.
- Bitwarden’s 2025 audits: Cure53 audited the browser extension, core app, desktop app, web vault and cryptography libraries; ETH Zurich’s Applied Cryptography Group reviewed the core cryptography assuming a fully malicious server; Unit 42 audited the mobile apps; Fracture Labs tested the web app and network.
- 1Password’s assessments: Independent Security Evaluators ran a penetration test and code review in April and June 2020, and Onica assessed its security architecture (no date given). Since November 3, 2025, 1Password says all yearly pentest reports go through its Trust Center. Its bug bounty moved to HackerOne in December 2024.
- Certifications: Bitwarden says it has SOC 2 Type 2, SOC 3 and ISO 27001. 1Password lists ISO 27001:2022 and three related ISO standards, plus a SOC 2 Type 2 report on request.
- Encryption design: 1Password combines your account password with a Secret Key generated on your device, so a stolen password alone isn’t enough. Bitwarden derives your key from your master password with PBKDF2 or Argon2id, a setting you can change.
- Open source: Bitwarden publishes its code on GitHub; 1Password doesn’t.
Both are zero-knowledge designs, meaning the company stores only encrypted vaults it can’t read.
Features compared
1Password has the one feature Bitwarden lacks outright, Travel Mode, which removes all but your “safe for travel” vaults from your devices before a border crossing; Bitwarden answers with self-hosting, open source code and a free plan.
| Feature | Bitwarden | 1Password |
|---|---|---|
| Autofill and password generator | Free and paid | All plans |
| Passkeys | Browser extension and mobile apps (iOS 17+, Android 14+) | Yes |
| Authenticator codes (TOTP) | Premium and up | Yes |
| Emergency access | Premium and up | Not compared |
| Secure sharing outside your account | Bitwarden Send (free) | Share items with anyone, even without 1Password |
| Weak and breached password alerts | Vault health reports (Premium) | Watchtower |
| File attachments | Premium and up | Encrypted document storage |
| Travel Mode | Not listed | Every subscription |
| Self-hosting | Yes | Not listed |
Bitwarden vs 1Password for families
Bitwarden Families costs $47.88 a year for up to 6 people, while 1Password Families costs $71.88 a year for 5 people at its regular price.
Both plans give every member a full premium account plus shared vaults. Bitwarden Families includes unlimited sharing and collections, with separate storage for personal and family files. 1Password Families lets you invite up to 5 family members and share unlimited vaults, with admin controls to manage access. For a family of six, Bitwarden is the only one of the two that fits everyone on one plan.
What about Apple Passwords?
Apple Passwords is free and built into iPhone, iPad and Mac (macOS 15 or later), and Windows PCs can use it through iCloud for Windows with browser extensions for Chrome, Edge and Firefox. Apple’s support pages describe no Android app, so a household with Android phones is better served by Bitwarden or 1Password. If you’re mainly protecting an iPhone, our guide to antivirus for iPhone explains which built-in protections already cover you; for a Mac, see do Macs need antivirus.
Who should pick which?
Bitwarden is the right pick for most people because it does the core job free, and its paid tiers cost less than 1Password’s at every household size.
- Pick Bitwarden if you want a free plan, use Linux or Android, have a family of six, want to self-host, or want open source code you can inspect.
- Pick 1Password if you travel across borders with sensitive data and want Travel Mode, or you want a 14-day trial before paying.
- Pick Apple Passwords if every device you own is an Apple device or a Windows PC and you want nothing to install.

Switching between Bitwarden and 1Password
Moving from 1Password to Bitwarden takes one export and one import: export from the 1Password desktop app (File > Export, as .1pux or .csv), then import in Bitwarden’s web app under Tools > Import. Going the other way, 1Password imports Bitwarden’s password-protected encrypted JSON export in its desktop app or on 1Password.com. Delete the export file once the import finishes, because it may contain your passwords in readable form.
