Is Windows Defender Enough? What the 2026 Lab Tests Say

Yes, for most home users: Microsoft Defender Antivirus (formerly Windows Defender), built into Windows 10 and 11, scored 6/6 for protection in AV-TEST's August 2026 Windows 11 test, the same as Norton 360 and McAfee Total Protection. Paid suites mainly add a VPN, a password manager, identity monitoring and web protection outside Microsoft Edge (lab results checked October 24, 2026).

  • Protection: 6/6 at AV-TEST (July–August 2026); 99% with zero false alarms at AV-Comparatives (February–May 2026)
  • Cost: nothing extra; included with Windows 10 and 11
  • Weak spot: speed, 5.5/6 for performance at AV-TEST
  • Lacks: VPN, password manager, identity monitoring, SmartScreen site checks outside Edge

What does Microsoft Defender include?

Microsoft Defender Antivirus gives you real-time and cloud-delivered malware protection, built into Windows 10 and 11 and on by default.

  • Real-time scanning: checks files as you open and download them, with definitions that update automatically through Windows Update.
  • Ransomware protection (controlled folder access): blocks untrusted apps from changing files in Documents, Pictures and other protected folders. Microsoft turns it off by default; you switch it on in Windows Security.
  • Microsoft Defender SmartScreen: checks websites and downloads for known threats when you browse in Microsoft Edge, and checks the reputation of apps and files you download.
  • Phishing protection: on Windows 11, warns you if you type your Windows sign-in password into a malicious site.

Is Windows Defender enough, according to the labs?

Windows Defender blocks malware as well as the paid suites but slows some tasks more. Microsoft Defender Antivirus scored the maximum for protection in every AV-TEST Windows 11 round from December 2025 to August 2026.

AV-TEST round (Windows 11)ProtectionPerformance
December 20256/66/6
February 20266/66/6
April 20266/66/6
June 20266/65.5/6
August 20266/65.5/6

Defender’s weak spot is speed. In AV-TEST’s August 2026 report, Defender slowed the installation of common apps by 44% on a standard PC, against an industry average of 15%. AV-Comparatives’ September 2026 Performance Test gave Defender an impact score of 13.5, against 3.1 for McAfee and 4.9 for Norton (lower is better).

AV-Comparatives’ Real-World test is where Defender looks best. Defender blocked threats at a 99% rate between February and May 2026 and was the only product with 0 false alarms.

What doesn’t Windows Defender do?

Windows Defender covers malware, but not the privacy and identity extras that paid suites sell.

  • No VPN. Norton 360, McAfee and Bitdefender plans include one.
  • No password manager or identity monitoring in Defender itself.
  • Web site checks only in Edge. Microsoft documents SmartScreen website warnings for Microsoft Edge only; its support page doesn’t describe the same site checks in Chrome or Firefox.
  • Ransomware folder protection is off until you turn it on.
  • Slower app installs than most paid products in AV-TEST’s August 2026 round.

Windows Defender vs McAfee: which is better?

Windows Defender matches McAfee on AV-TEST protection and beat it on AV-Comparatives’ Real-World rate (99% vs 98.5%). McAfee is lighter on your PC and adds a VPN and identity monitoring, for $39.99 in year one and $119.99 after. Our McAfee verdict covers whether those extras are worth it.

Windows Defender vs Norton: which is better?

Windows Defender and Norton 360 both scored 6/6 for protection at AV-TEST; Norton scored a little higher at AV-Comparatives (99.3% vs 99%) and ran faster. Norton 360 Deluxe adds a VPN, password manager, 50 GB of cloud backup and parental controls for $49.99 in year one, then $124.99. If you’re choosing between the two paid brands, see Norton vs McAfee, or is Norton worth it for Norton alone.

Does Windows 11 need antivirus?

Windows 11 already has antivirus: Microsoft Defender Antivirus is turned on and scans automatically. Microsoft’s FAQ says you don’t need to install any other real-time antivirus. If you do install one, Defender switches itself off automatically and comes back on if that product expires or is uninstalled.

When is paying for antivirus worth it?

Paying makes sense when you want something Defender doesn’t do, not for better malware blocking.

  • You want a VPN, password manager and identity monitoring on one bill.
  • You browse mostly in Chrome or Firefox and want web filtering there.
  • You need parental controls or cloud backup.
  • You protect phones and Macs too and want one subscription.
  • Your PC is slow and app installs drag; AV-TEST measured lighter impact from most paid products.

If you do pay, our Malwarebytes review and TotalAV review cover two paid options. On a Mac the answer is different; see whether Macs need antivirus.

How do you check Defender is on and up to date?

Windows Security shows Defender’s status in three clicks.

  1. Open Windows Security and select Virus & threat protection.
  2. Under Who’s protecting me?, select Manage providers and check that Microsoft Defender Antivirus is turned on.
  3. Back on Virus & threat protection, open Protection updates and select Check for updates.
